CHAPTER 1035
The Chickenhawk Flyer- December 2009
President: Glen Brodeur
Vice President: Don Lapointe
Secretary/ Treasurer: Tom Veile
Acting Editor: Glen Brodeur
Next Meeting: Thursday December 10 at the Danielson Airport at 7:00 PM.
Meeting called to order @ 7:20 by incoming president Glen Brodeur
Minutes of the October meeting read and accepted
Treasurer’s October report read and accepted
Old business: None
New business:
President Brodeur commenced the meeting by saying that the chapter members should check out the recent changes to the EAA HQ’s website www.eaa.org if they haven’t done so already. There have been significant changes for the better to the site. One area in particular (Oshkosh365) allows online access to “Sport Aviation” and “Experimenter” magazines all the way back to 1953. Previously, you had to buy an expensive set of CD’s to do this. You can also read the latetest Sport Aviation online before you get it in the mail. Unlike the old site, this site is interactive. It allows members to post questions and to form groups of like minded individuals, say builders of a particular aircraft for example. It’s your dues that is paying for this, you should use it.
He then asked the membership to consider a chapter project. Not an aircraft project, but one of a different nature. Specifically, perhaps the chapter could think about sponsoring or co-sponsoring a deserving youngster to attend the EAA Youth Academy. Trevor Rzucidlo also suggested that perhaps the chapter could establish a scholarship in the amount of $500. No motions were asked for or resolutions were past but it is food for thought for upcoming meetings.
Our Young Eagles coordinator, John Haney, has tentatively set Young Eagles Day for June 12 with a rain date of the 13th. Glen Brodeur offered that prospective Young Eagles could have the opportunity to be voluntarily fingerprinted at the event. The cards would then be turned over to the parents for safekeeping. Renee Brodeur, an FBI trained fingerprint technician has volunteered to do this if the chapter is in favor. It was also suggested that we keep a record of the names of the young eagles for posterity.
Andy Toni brought up the suggestion that the chapter consider purchasing an “I” bond at this time. He feels that this would be the most opportune time to do so. May we ask our Treasurer to look into this?
Business meeting adjourned at 7:45
After the conclusion of the business portion of the meeting, Glen Brodeur gave a short demonstration of Microsoft’s flight simulator. Using a laptop and a “control yoke”, we made a circuit around the pattern at Danielson airport in a Cessna 172. The standard (19.95) version “X” program has 18 aircraft in the package and includes the Air Creation Trike ultralight, the venerable J-3 Cub to the Boeing 747 and Airbus A-321. Want to fly a Lear jet? Here’s your chance. The upgraded X-Plane 9 software ($48.95) allows individuals to design their own aircraft. And, for all you would be shuttle pilots out there, it’s in the program for you to try. Also, you can download thousands of aircraft online into the programs. The flight sim programs and the control yoke can be purchased online at www.mypilotstore.com for as little as $19.95 and $114 respectively. Rudder pedals can be added for even more realism for an additional $116. Whether you are an arm chair pilot or working to stay current, this is by far the best bang for your buck out there. While nothing can replace the actual flying experience, in my opinion, this offers some fairly realistic aircraft performance, weather conditions and cockpit amenities. The COM and NAV radios, the ADF, and GPS all work. With over 18,000 airports around the world at your fingertips, this will keep you very busy navigating and shooting approaches into exotic places. And for the ultimate experience, 3-D glasses are also available. As always, when considering a purchase, be sure to check your computer’s compatibility with any software beforehand. Maybe Santa will be good to you or your favorite pilot this year.
Looking for that $100 hamburger? Try the restaurant at Minuteman Airfield in Stow, MA. They have a very good, nominally priced menu and a professional staff. The “Phantom Gourmet” gives this establishment high marks. They also offered “Senior Specials” the day we were there. This is a great way to impress your significant other or flying buddy with your aviation prowess and treat them to a great meal to boot. And for your aircraft, mogas is available as well as 100LL. Always call ahead to check fuel availability.
NOTICE: If you still carry a paper Airmen’s Certificate you must get a plastic replacement as they will become null and void by March/2010.
Respectfully submitted,
Glen Brodeur- President
